In this lesson, students get to figure out their healthy eating style. Eating right is really hard if you don’t enjoy what you’re eating! After exploring each food group, students will create a bank of foods they enjoy in each group. They’ll use their “food banks” to make healthy plans for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.

Description:

After determining their healthy eating styles, students will share their plans for increasing the nutritional content of their lunches. They will write letters to their parents to share how their eating style will impact their lunches, asking to purchase and pack new types of food.

improve their breakfast plans. Students create breakfasts with increased amounts of nutrients and deliver presentations to share about their revamped meals.

Description:

After learning about the importance of staying hydrated, students work in teams to create their own hydration trackers. Using technology, students write press releases to announce the debut of their trackers. Throughout the lesson, students will learn that it’s important to hydrate early and often.

Description:

After learning about the four primary tastes, students will be introduced to the 5th taste: umami. They will read a short piece about how umami was discovered and engage in tasting foods umami flavors. Students will be charged to bring umami to the masses by creating compelling visual advertisements for umami foods.

Description:

Students will develop an understanding of how food gives people energy and consider the optimal amount of calories for different ages, sizes, and activity levels. Finally, they will try creating a balanced meal plan that also accounts for their daily activity level.

Description:

Students will begin by looking at different snack foods and making claims about which they think is the healthiest. After being introduced to the nutrition labels on the snacks, students will investigate their claims and revise them as needed. Students will learn about the requirements for calling something “high,” “low,” or “good source of” and will create investigative reports about the nutritional content of a snack food.
